Work from Home (WFH) has now become the preferred option for almost any organization. This is particularly true in India, where the second wave of pandemic has been so devastating that WFH seems to be inevitable in the near future.
There is a significant load on the mobile networks in this environment as students are attending their online classes and the working class are having office meetings online. This has resulted in significant speed drops across all 4G networks in India, making everyone annoyed.
There is no better time than now to get a broadband connection at home. For those who believe it is an unnecessary expense, I have thought the same my entire life, and now I believe it is completely worth it.
In India, there are numerous regional and nation-wide ISPs available, such as Jio, Airtel and BSNL.
In this article, I’ll tell you how I ended up switching to Jio Fiber and how my experience has been so far. I’ll also show you how you can get a Jio Fiber connection at your home without having to go anywhere.
The experience with my first fiber connection from BSNL
Let me tell you a small story about how I decided to get a broadband connection for my daily job requirements:
I might not have addressed this in a previous post, but I graduated from university in September of last year—as most of you are aware, university exams were postponed across India due to the pandemic last year.
I received a job offer from an IT company in India shortly after graduating. I was told straight away that WFH will continue and that there was no need for me to join the office. The company provided me with a PC to work on, and since I was still hesitant to get a broadband connection, I resorted to USB tethering via my phone for all of the zoom meetings and project work.
It was going smoothly for the first few months, before I was assigned to a new team working on a client project. Then, due to the high latency and the ever-increasing loads on residential cell towers, I began to experience considerable difficulty whilst working on the client’s server and it left me frustrated.
This was when I finally decided: F** mobile data and resolved to a broadband. Here arises another problem: Lack of ISPs in my area at the time. I hesitantly resolved to the only service provider that was active in my area as of December 2020: BSNL.
I got there FTTH connection installed at my home at some really high costs (Rs. 3500 for the connection itself without any plans) and boy those upload and download speeds were low. I had a 50 mbps connection and the maximum speed I could get out of it was just around 4 to 5 mbps download.
Also, not to mention there were significantly higher service disruptions with BSNL FTTH and it happened almost 2 to 3 times a week for an hour sometimes even longer.
How I made up my mind to switch to Jio Fiber
There were 3 main reasons: Reliability, Speed and Cost to benefits ratio.
As can be seen from the last paragraph of the previous section, my experience with BSNL FTTH was woeful. I needed something dependable, with few service interruptions and good speed. I had two options: Airtel Xstream Fiber and Jio Fiber.
I choose Jio Fiber, and I’ve been using it for two months at the time of writing this article. I received the connection on February 27th, 2021.
Do you want to get a Jio Fiber connection for your home? Here are the simple steps you should follow to get a connection.
Determine whether Jio Fiber is available in your area.
This is the most crucial step. Check to see if Jio provides broadband services in your region.
Call your nearest Jio store and ask if you can get a Fiber connection at your home. Follow the steps below to find the addresses and phone numbers of all Jio stores in your area:
1.Open the link: https://www.jio.com/selfcare/locate-us/
2. Enter the name of your area in the search box and hit Enter.
3. The list of all the Jio stores in your area will be displayed. Click or tap on any one of them and you will get the complete address of the Jio store along with the phone number.
Booking the Jio Fiber
This process is as easy as it gets. Once you’ve determined that a connection is available in your region, all you have to do now is schedule your Fiber installation.
- Visit the link: https://www.jio.com/registration
- Enter your full name and mobile number and click on Generate OTP.
- Once you receive the OTP on your phone, enter the code in the box and click on Submit.
- Now, enter the Pin code of your area and your complete address along with your email ID and click on Submit.
- You need to confirm your address now. Then just follow through the steps and you have successfully booked a Fiber connection for your home.
Note: If Jio Fiber is not available in your area yet, you will see the message as shown in below picture.
After you’ve completed the booking process, you’ll receive a notification confirming the date and time of a Jio representative’s visit to your home for documentation and other things.
For the documentation process, a Jio representative will arrive at your home on the agreed date and time. Let me give you a quick rundown of the procedure:
- You only need two things for the completion of the process: Time and an Aadhar card.
- The representative will complete the documentation process digitally through their phone and take a photo of you and your aadhar card for verification.
- Once you are done, you’ll need to pay Rs. 2500. (Rs. 1500 more if you also want the Jio smart set-top box). You must pay using a credit/debit card using the link you will receive via text message to the mobile number you provided during the documentation process.
- After the payment is successful, you have booked your Jio Fiber connection. Now, is the time for installation.
Note: If you decide to cancel the service in the future, the payment will be refunded.
Jio Fiber installation
You will now get a call from a Jio engineer within 1 or 2 days of completing the documentation process (this time may be a bit longer considering the second-wave of the pandemic in India). They will come to your house and install the Jio router and set-top box (if you opted for it). This process does not take long because there is a team of guys who do it.
The engineer will explain how to recharge your Jio Fiber using the My Jio app and how to update the password for your WiFi. For the first month, you will be charged nothing and you will receive 30 days of unlimited data at 150 mbps speed as well as unlimited calls on your Jio Fiber.
Note: For the best speeds, use the 5GHz bandwith (if your device supports it).
